Church Outreach

The Outreach of Camp United Methodist Church extends as widely as our members’ interests and gifts vary. These are just some of the outlets through which we minister as a congregation or individual Christians in our community:

Union Elementary School: We adopted Union Elementary School

through Brunswick County Communities in Schools, the first local church to adopt a public school in Brunswick County. Union Elementary serves approximately 900 students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grades. Opportunities abound for adults, youth and children to make a difference in a child’s life through one-on-one encounters or from behind the scenes through the entire calendar year.

Mothers’ Morning Out Ministry (MMOM): This children’s ministry provides opportunities for preschoolers ages three months to pre-kindergarten to have happy learning experiences at church. It provides mothers with a regular block of time each week to meet their personal needs. MMOM meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from

8:30 a.m. to 12 noon during the school year. Children develop new relationships, participate in group time, dramatic play, Bible study, arts and crafts and outdoor play, with a mid-morning snack.

Church Birthday/Anniversary Bank: On the first Sunday of each month anyone celebrating a birthday or anniversary that month is invited to contribute to the church bank at the front of the sanctuary while the congregation sings “Happy Birthday.” Proceeds are used to buy clothing and Christmas presents for children identified by Union and Supply elementary schools. Contact the church office at 754-4840 to make sure your family’s birthdays and anniversaries are on the calendar.

Puppet Evangelism: Children from our church and Seaside United Methodist Church periodically present the gospel message through puppets at local churches and to other organizations.

South Brunswick Inter-Church Council (SBIC): Camp Church belongs to the council and supports its ecumenical worship services, the annual CROP Walk Against Hunger and RUN FOR

FOOD events, and ministries such as emergency aid to transients and others in need.

Food Pantry: We house the SBIC’s Shallotte Area Food Pantry and rotate with several other local churches in stocking and staffing. Pantry hours are 10 a.m. to 12 noon each Saturday.

Literacy: Working with Brunswick Community College, Camp UMC houses a daytime GED class that allows participants to work toward the equivalent of a high school diploma.  We also encourage members to volunteer as one-on-one tutors for youth and adults with the Brunswick County Literacy Council and collect books for BCLC’s annual Holiday Book Share.

Hope Harbor Home: Volunteers serve as court advocates for victims of domestic violence, provide transportation, answer a 24-hour crisis line and staff  the Hope Chest thrift stores.

Meals On Wheels: Volunteers take two hours one morning a week to deliver hot meals to the homebound

The Mustard Seed: This ministry provides support to young mothers and their infants.

Providence Home Teen Shelter: Volunteers serve on the board, help raise funds, staff Sheltered Treasurers thrift shops.

Tree of Hope: We support Brunswick Family Assistance Agency by providing toys and clothing at Christmas.

Community Fund-Raising Events: In addition to the CROP WALK, many of us support charitable fund-raisers. Camp UMC regularly sponsors a team in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life each May.

Lifeline Pregnancy Center:  Our baby shower provides money and baby necessities to this ministry to unwed mothers.

Conference and District Missions: Being a connectional church means we partner with sister United Methodist Churches to reach out across the world. Some of our current missions include Methodist Home for Children, Wilmington District; Project AGAPE in Armenia;  Ganta Mission in Liberia, with Revs. Herbert and Mary Zigbuo, missionaries; and Pat and Walt Ebert, missionaries currently assigned to Redbird Mission, Kentucky. We also provide financial support to a lesser extent to Robeson County Church & Community Center in Lumberton and Project ZOE, an

outreach ministry to AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe.
