1892 CHURCH QUILT

The church is excited about the relocation and preservation of the quilt which had been outside the Music Office. The quilt was moved to the Fellowship Hall and enclosed in a glass case. A plaque is beside the case which tells the story:

"This quilt was made by the women of the 'Ladies Aid Society' of Oxford Methodist Church, and was sold at auction for $100. The year was 1892 when money was raised to buy the lot on which this church now stands. Construction on the church building was completed in 1902.  The quilt was presented to Oxford United Methodist Church in 2004 by Mrs. Nelson (Rachel) Thomas, as the quilt was originally purchased by Mr. Thomas' grandfather, John Henry Bullock, and had been in the possession of his parents, Dr. and Mrs. W. N. Thomas for over 100 years."

Installation of the quilt in the glass case was done by the 'HELPING HANDS' tandem of John Hardy and Doan Laursen. The site and case should help to preserve the quilt for another hundred years.  Assistance from Florine Dement and Ellen Jenkins is credited with the beautiful painted finish on the case.

Preservation of the quilt is also assured by the special backing from which the quilt is hung in the case.  Jane Reeder supervised the advisory aspect of the installation and the actual application of the backing. She also performed minor repairs to the quilt. Other sewing assistance was provided by a number of church members,  Jean West, Marion Dean, Florine dement, and Dot Rogers

Be sure to stop by the Fellowship Hall to take a look at our prized piece. All the details of the work from 1887 is now accessible to see and cherish. Glory to God for all the marvelous work of the church these 100 plus years.
